During the winter term of 1916-1917 Freud gave lectures at Vienna University for the last time. After he gave up teaching, no more lectures on psychoanalysis are given at Vienna University.
Freud produces the article Transience for the memorial volume of the Berlin Goethe Society. Here, influenced by the effect of the war, he describes mourning as a great psychological puzzle. It remains unclear to psychologists why the libido clings to its objects and does not want to give up lost objects.
