Visit of Rainer Maria Rilke.
Rilke was already acquainted with psychoanalysis through his friendship with Lou Andreas-Salome and in Vienna he visited Freud. He was "charming company", Freud informed Ferenczi after the visit. Anna was a great admirer of Rilke's poetry which, as she later wrote, could provide her with as much insight into the human psyche aspsychoanalysis.

Together with Karl Abraham he works on the psychology of depression. In the essay Thoughts for the Times on War and Death he elaborates his ideas about the outbreak of the First World War and the consequences of the conflict between culture and instinctual life.
A series of important metapsychological works are produced: Instincts and Their Vicissitudes, Repression and The Unconscious.
