Wilhelm Fliess and Freud meet for the last time in Vienna.
Freud's friendship with Fliess had been gradually cooling before this meeting, ever since the publication of The Interpretation of Dreams.
"I have already explained that my close friendships like my enmities with coevals go back to my infantile relations with a nephew one year older than myself. He was the dominant one and I learnt early how to defend myself; we were inseparable, lived together and loved each other and , as the reports of adults testify, fought and - accused each other. All my friends are in some sense incarnations of this first image... An intimate friend and a hated enemy have always been necessary requirements of my emotional life: I have always known how to how to find myself both anew and it is not infrequent that friend and foe are combined in the same person." (The Interpretation of Dreams)
Minna Bernays
Freud's sister-in-law Minna Bernays, with whom he travelled via Munich to Bolzano in 1903.
Freud works on the manuscript of Jokes and their Relation to the Unconscious.
