City Walk

A Guided Tour of “Freud’s Vienna” with Claudia Muchitsch

Sigmund Freud never really grew to like Vienna – but nevertheless spent almost eighty years of his life in the Austrian metropolis. Freud lived together with his parents, brothers and sisters in Vienna’s second district, where he also went to school. While studying medicine he was a regular visitor to various university facilities between Schottenring and Währinger Straße, and as a young junior doctor the Vienna General Hospital (AKH) came to be his workplace and his home. Freud rented his first flat in the ninth district, before moving to Berggasse 19 in autumn 1891. Against the backdrop of international political events and developments this abode would for the next almost fifty years form the base for his everyday activities, that were part of a strict daily routine: walks, visits to coffee-houses, purchases at various antique dealers, short trips to the outlying districts of Vienna, etc.

Claudia Muchitsch, a certified tour guide and long-standing staff member of the Sigmund Freud Museum, takes you back in time in search of “Freud’s Vienna”. The profound authority on the cultural history of Vienna takes you to those places and sites that played a key role in the life and daily routine of Sigmund Freud in the birthplace of psychoanalysis. Optionally, the tour can be combined with a visit to one of Freud’s favourite coffee-houses.

Duration of the tour: approx. 120 minutes
