Sigmund Freud's Couch – a virtual installation
Sigmund Freud's famous couch can now be seen again at Berggasse 19 - as a digital experience on your smartphone.
In 1938, Sigmund Freud had to flee from National Socialism and took his possessions with him into exile in London. Today, the bare wall in the treatment room serves as a reminder of Freud's escape and the loss of culture and humanity under National Socialism. Now the couch is returning to its original location with an augmented reality application for smartphones - virtually and temporarily.
The process
You will find a QR code in Sigmund Freud's treatment room. Scan it, use the linked app and follow the instructions. The 3D image of the couch will appear. Click on the letter to hear a text about the furniture and its historical significance. The image of the couch then disappears again, leaving a blank space - just like in reality.
The real couch remains in the Freud Museum London, which we would like to thank the team in London for this cooperation.
