Arcanum Somniorum - The Secret of Dreams
Handcrafted exclusively for the Sigmund Freud Museum and limited to 30 pieces: the design of the box pays tribute to the significance of Sigmund Freud's groundbreaking work. In a perfect symbiosis of dream symbolism, psychoanalytic depth, and precision craftsmanship, the ARCANUM SOMNIORUM design embodies essential core elements of Sigmund Freud's teachings: the significance of dreams, the role of drives, and the path to self-knowledge as a prerequisite for healing. A metaphorical journey into the depths of psychology, framed in wood.
Woods that do not endanger the existence of tropical rainforests were chosen as the production material. SaRaiFo woods (SAve the RAIn FOrest) are reproductions of tropical precious woods made from fast-growing hardwoods. The production process, from the wooden plank to the finished varnish of the desk secretary, is carried out by hand or with hand-guided machines. Each piece is a rare and exclusive item.

Based on the concepts of the id, ego, and superego, the desk secretary is divided into three levels. Gold-colored brass elements on the fronts continue the gold/black color scheme of the lid. The frieze on the top level, hand-carved using traditional Japanese naguri techniques, symbolizes the dividing layer that separates the unconscious from the conscious. The back of the box is dedicated to Freud's famous quote, “Where it was, I shall become” (Ubi Id erat, Ego fieri debet). Above it is a woodcut-like representation of a section of Freud's face, limited to the eyes and ears, the fundamental tools of the analyst. The sides of the body feature a reference to the medical location that houses the entirety of our personality: the neural network in our brains.
