It Hurts! Violence Against Women in Art and Psychoanalysis

Elana Shapira, Daniela Finzi (Editors)

Psychoanalysis, which explores the unconscious, provided artists of the 20th and 21st centuries with new concepts, terminology, and valuable psychological tools for dealing with the social phenomenon of violence against women. This volume presents groundbreaking research on the representation of gender-based violence in art. Cultural constructions interwoven with the phenomenon are examined, and strategies of counterpositioning in art and psychoanalysis developed on different continents are revealed. Artists include Oskar Kokoschka, María Izquierdo, Grete Stern, Dorothea Tanning, Ana Mendieta, Kiki Kogelnik, Marina Abramović, Soli Kiani, Sigalit Landau, Hava Raucher, filmmaker Ruth Beckermann, and philosopher Hélène Cixous.
