J.M. Coetzee: Sigmund Freud und die Ehe

J. M. Coetzee: Sigmund Freud und die Ehe. This volume is available in German only:

J.M. Coetzee: Neither in his scientific work nor in his relationship with Martha (Freud, née Bernays) did Sigmund Freud show much interest in the spiritual dimensions of marriage. Personally, one cannot blame him for this, but it remains regrettable that the founder of psychoanalysis never steered the discipline in this direction. Among the many aspects of marriage, I will mention two that Freud could have devoted his attention to: What distinguishes the people we fall in love with (“object choice”) and how does jealousy work (“normal jealousy,” as he calls it)? Despite his solid humanistic education, it does not occur to Freud to build on the thinking of Plato, Aristotle, and the Stoics on such questions.

Equally disappointing is his detachment from contemporary movements in art and literature, as well as the revolution in sexual relations that was taking place around him. He could have learned a lot from his younger Viennese contemporary Robert Musil."
