“This piece reconsiders the basic theoretical and practical thinking behind intersubjective systems theory as developed by Robert Stolorow, George Atwood, and Bernard Brandcraft, and my own reasons for preferring it. It then moves on to consider this theory’s continuity with what is being described as an 'ethical turn' in contemporary psychoanalysis, calling us out to respond inclusively to the sufferings of our patients within the larger worlds we and they share. It points toward ethical subjectivity as a radical turn away from the modern ego based on material possessiveness and competition.” (Donna Orange, 2018)

Donna Orange is a psychoanalyst and philosopher living in California. She teaches at the NYU Postdoctoral Program and the Institute for the Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity, New York. Currently, she is based in Vienna as Fulbright-Freud Visiting Lecturer of Psychoanalysis.
