Edward Bernays and Ernest Dichter

In his lecture, the author of the highly acclaimed book Vienna: How the City of Ideas Created the Modern World highlights the connections and influence of two emigrés from Vienna who had a lasting impact on global consumer society: Edward Bernays and Ernest Dichter. Bernays, Sigmund Freud's nephew, is considered the inventor of public relations; with his campaigns, he revolutionized the public image of brands. No less significant is the work of Dichter: coming from the Jewish department store dynasty Dichter, he developed motivation research in the USA, now a cornerstone of the modern advertising industry.

Richard Cockett is a British historian, author, and journalist for the business and news magazine The Economist. He has been a correspondent in Mexico, Central America, Africa, and Southeast Asia, among other places. Cockett was a visiting professor of politics and history at Royal Holloway, University of London, and is currently a member of the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton in the United States.
