Arthur Schnitzler visits Freud at Berggasse. Freud always asserted that he had avoided him because he was his "literary Double". Schnitzler notes the meeting in his diary: "at Prof. Freud. (His congratulations on my birthday, my reply, his invitation.) Wife and daughter Anna (whom Lili taught for a few months last year). - Only spoke to him briefly a few times until now. - He was very affectionate. Conversation about hospital and military service days, bosses in common, etc. - Lieutenant Gustl etc. - then he shows me his library - his own things, translations, writings of his pupils; - all sorts of little antique bronzes etc; - he is not longer in medical practice, only trains pupils who for this purpose let themselves be analyzed by him. Gives me a beautiful new edition of his lectures. - Accompanies me late in the evening from Berggasse to my home. - The talk becomes warmer and more personal; - About getting old and dying;" [16.6.1922]
