SIGMUND FREUD THEMES

When in 1938 Freud had to leave his antiquities behind in Vienna, he travelled into exile "under the protection of Athena" -- a favourite statuette from his collection, that had been smuggled out. Once in England, he waited for the arrival of his collection of over 2000 antiquities, for whose export he had paid a large sum to the Nazis. The uncertain fate of the collection was one of the things that concerned him in the weeks following his flight: only on their arrival, he wrote, would he finally feel himself "free of the Nazis".
