SIGMUND FREUD THEMES

Freud had collected antiquities since the late 1890s and the well-known Viennese archaeologists Emanuel Loewy and Ludwig Pollak were among his friends and advisors. Freud's passion for collecting emerged during the years in which he was elaborating the first elements of psychoanalysis. This historical combination was to leave metaphorical traces in his work: in The Psychopathology of Everyday Life he illustrated misreading with an example based on his own love of collecting.
Bird with human head, Freud's collection
"Bird with human head"
Egypt, Ptolemaic Period, 332 - 30 BC.
"There is one misreading which I find irritating and laughable and to which I am prone whenever I walk through the streets of a strange town on my holidays. On these occasions I read every shop sign that resembles the word in any way as 'Antiquities'. This betrays the questing spirit of the collector."
Baboon of Thoth, Freud's collection
"Baboon of Thoth"
Egypt, Roman Period, 30 BC. - 395 AD
