SIGMUND FREUD CHRONOLOGY

	The first volumes of Freud's Collected Works appears.

	Freud is so impressed by Cecil Murray's report on telepathic experiments at the Society for Psychical Research that he is "prepared to give up his resistances to the existence of thought transference".
	"As you remember I already expressed a favorable bias toward telepathy during our trip to the Harz. But there was no need to do so publicly; my conviction was not very strong, and the diplomatic aspect of preventing psychoanalysis from drawing too close to occultism very easily retained the upper hand. Now, the revision of Traumdeutung for the collected edition gave me the impetus to reconsider the problem of telepathy. In the meantime, however, my personal experience through tests, which I undertood with Ferenczi and my daughter, have attained such convincing power over me that diplomatic considerations had to be relinquished. Again I was presented with an instance where, on a very much reduced scale, I had to repeat the great experiment of my life; namely, to admit to a conviction without considering the resonance of the world around me. So it was then inevitable. If anyone should bring up with you my Fall from grace , just answer calmly that my acceptance of telepathy is my own affair, like my Judaism and my passion for smoking, etc., and that the subject of telepathy is not related to psychoanalysis." 	Freud protests to Julius Tandler against the decision of the Vienna court that forbids Theodor Reik from practising psychoanalysis.
	The "Reik case" instigates Freud to write an uncompromising defence of lay analysis, although in other countries like the USA non-medical practicioners are being increasingly excluded from the psychoanalytical societies. After a discussion with Tandler Freud writes to him: "You appeared to approve of my statement that 'in psychoanalysis everyone is to be regarded as a layman who cannot prove that they have had a satisfactory training in its theory and technique,' regardless whether they have a medical diploma or not. The reasoning in the document from the Vienna court appears to me to give ground for serious objections. Above all they have not taken into consideration two undeniable facts, firstly that psychoanalysis, whether as a science or as a technique, is not a purely medical matter; secondly, that it is not taught to students of medicine at the university. 	Freudian theory is filmed. The German film company UFA tries to gain Freud's collaboration on a film about psychoanalysis. While the two Berlin analysts Hanns Sachs and Karl Abraham are prepared to collaborate on the scenario of Secrets of a Soul (directed by G.W. Pabst), Freud refuses to have anything to do with the film

	Marie Bonaparte pays her first visit on Freud in Vienna.

	The American Dorothy Burlingham comes to Freud in Vienna in order to have herself and her children psychoanalyzed and soon becomes a close friend of Anna.
	This year Freud publishes A Note upon the Mystic Writing Pad, An Autobiographical Study, The Resistances to Psycho- Analysis, Negation, Some Psychical Consequences of the Anatomical Distinction between the Sexes.
