CONFERENCE
23 November
2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Ort: Sigmund Freud Museum, Berggasse 19, 1090 Vienna
Remembrance and Violence in former Yugoslavia
The conference’s objective is an in-depth-analysis of the role of competing historic narratives, their possible contribution to the violent dissolution of Yugoslavia, and an assessment of how the successor states and their societies could deal with the bloody heritage of memory and history today. The speakers will reflect on the function and current role of "ethnic" discourses, the chances for building a solid civil society in the successor states, and will also discuss the options for implementing a policy of "truth and reconciliation" in order to pacify the Balkans and move the region closer to European integration.
UN Ambassador Wolfgang Petritsch, the convener of this conference, will introduce the issue, thereby drawing from his inside knowledge as the former EU-envoy to Kosovo and top civil administrator of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Noted Historian Sabrina Petra Ramet will analyse the logic of competing historical narratives on the territory of former Yugoslavia.
Dunja Blažević, Director of the Sarajevo Centre for Contemporary Arts, will talk about the artist’s work on the de/construction of cultural and historical monuments.
Zarko Korac, former Deputy Prime Minister in Djindjic’s government, will deal with Serbia’s role in the drama of the recent Balkan wars and discuss ways towards a peaceful European future.
