Rainer on Freud An exhibition of Arnulf Rainer's overpaintings of Sigmund Freud portrait photos 23 November 2006 - 19 March 2007 at the Sigmund Freud Museum "Rainer on Freud" began at a meeting of Arnulf Rainer and Inge Scholz-Strasser in the autumn of 2005. The artist planned to create a series of work on the occasion of the Freud year. He selected a total of 27 images to be overpainted. This exhibition, which evolved in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was first on view at the Austrian Culture Forum in Prague. Now it is being shown at the Sigmund Freud Museum, a setting in which Rainer's overpaintings promise to open new perspectives on the founder of psychoanalysis. With this exhibition, the Sigmund Freud Museum continues in the endeavor of accenting the relationship between psychoanalysis and art, which it has been pursuing since 1989. Since that year, the fiftieth anniversary of Freud's death, the Sigmund Freud Foundation has been assembling a collection of contemporary art and has presented exhibitions featuring contemporary artists' explorations of psychoanalysis on a regular basis. This exhibition represents the conclusion of the special events taking place during the Freud year 2006 and demonstrates the manifold avenues by which psychoanalysis and Sigmund Freud can be approached. press review
