Hans Kelsen ist einem weiteren Publikum als Mitschöpfer der österreichischen Bundesverfassung von 1920 und als Begründer der "Reinen Rechtslehre" bekannt. Zum umfangreichen und vielschichtigen Gesamtwerk Kelsens gehören indessen auch demokratietheoretische, soziologische und sozialphilosophische Untersuchungen. Dort setzt sich Kelsen mehrfach mit Sigmund Freud auseinander. Darüber hinaus gibt es implizite Verbindungen. Zwischen beiden Zentralgestalten des damaligen Wiener Geisteslebens bestand auch eine persönliche Bekanntschaft, so nahm Kelsen an Sitzungen der Psychologischen Mittwochs-Gesellschaft Freuds teil.

At the time of its publication Freud's Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego (1921) was considered an orphan text in the Freudian corpus. Conceived in the aftermath of the Great War Freud's theory of the Masses may well be seen as a testimony to his increasingly pessimistic conceptions of human society. And yet, Group Psychology is not merely a by-product of his dual-drive theory. Equipped with all the necessary defense mechanisms this text has managed to escape the restrictive nomenclature, which Freud's writing has been subjected to. The budding psychoanalytic discourse in Mandatory Jewish Palestine in the 20's and 30's was the first to embrace Freud's Group Psychology wholeheartedly and to canonize it as the first of Freud's essays to appear in Hebrew.
In was in this specific part-European part-Oriental context that Group Psychology begun to inspire the Zionist nation-builders. The reception of this text, far remote from its immediate place of inception, can thus serve as the Shibboleth test to some of its latent, perhaps even subversive, qualities.
